Wonder

Wonder - R.J. Palacio

Wonder is about August. A ten year old boy who has a"previously unknown type of mandibulofacial dysostosis caused by an autosomal recessive mutation in TCOF1 gene.."

He is an ordinary boy with a not so ordinary face. Throughout the book you see how children & adults immediately assume that "Auggie" is a "special needs" child. That some how because of his face he lacks the ability to learn or have feelings.
The book is written in sections/POVs of
August - "Fate smiled and destiny laughed as she came to my cradle..." - Natalie Merchant, "Wonder
Via -(Sister)"For above the world Planet Earth is Blue And there's nothing I can do" David Bowie
Summer - "You are Beautiful no matter what they say, Words can't bring you down" - Christina Aguilera
Jack - "Now here is my secret. It is very simple. It is only with one's heart that one can see clearly. What is essential is invisible to the eye." - The Little Prince
Justin - "Sometimes I think my head is so big because it is so full of dreams." - John Merrick
Miranda - "I forgot that I might see so many beautiful things, I forgot that I might need to find out what life could Bring" - Andain

There are many issues in this book, not just with August. How August's sister Via has always felt like she had two moms, "August's mom" and "Via's mom".
How "sometimes you don't have to mean to hurt someone to hurt someone."
I think, sometimes we just think of a person as just flesh, we forget that behind those eyes, that smile or frown is a soul.

I like the message the book has:
"If every single person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary - the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God."
