Hello Book, So Long Sleep...

I'll read anything that looks interesting or has been recommended by friends. Most of the books I've really enjoyed were either Dystopian/post-apocalyptic or Young Adult.

I've got a few other series/trilogies I want to read this year.

To see my other ones -check out my 2015 Reading Goals.

Saga, volume four

Saga Volume 4 - Brian K. Vaughan, Fiona Staples

Sometimes I honestly feel like Saga is crack and I'm an addict. I'm pretty sure it's bad for me. All the robot sex, orgies, killings, but I just can't stop!

Love Alana & Marko.

We Are All Completely Fine by Daryl Gregory

We Are All Completely Fine - Daryl Gregory

Are you a Supernatural fan? Imagine Dean Winchester going to a group Therapy session with four victims. (each from a different season of the show.)

photo deanther_zps370dcdc8.jpg

Yep, that's how I felt about it.

Of course Harrison is no where near as Sexy, funny or sarcastic as Dean, but the whole set up felt like a Supernatural story.

It's short 182 pages. So it won't take long to read.

This Song Will Save your Life being adapted for Film & Stage

I read this book back in 2013, so I'm excited to see it's being adapted to Film.

So this year I'm only gonna have a challenge of 50 books. It doesn't seem like a lot compared to my 100 every years since I started doing challenges.

But this year I have a list of books that are from my TBR list that I've really wanted to read and have put off.

They are the following:

Be With You by Takuji Ichikawa

Trailer Here.

Reason to at least see the movie: Idris Elba

Byrd by Kim Church

Byrd - Kim Church

This is a book club read.

I'm thankful that this month's book was one I actually had on my TBR list.  Now did I like it? hmm.. It was okay.

I enjoyed the letters she wrote to Byrd, I think I might have liked it more if the entire book were her letters.

The story is about Addie. A woman who grew up in a small southern town. Had a crush on a boy who played guitar. He moves away, they end up getting together for a very brief visit and she ends up pregnant.

She gives the baby up for adoption. "Byrd" is what she names him. This is how she addresses all the letters she writes him.

I wanted to connect to the characters, but I couldn't. Everything felt so , blah.

Through out the book you also learn about Addie's family. Things that have shaped her to the person she is. Again, just was very mono-toned. Maybe that was the point. Addie's life was just that.

There was a spot at the end,

Roland's wife in the garage with the car

(show spoiler)

, was that really necessary?

Not sure I'd read more by this author.

Addie believes in books. They are more interesting than real life and easier to understand. Sometimes you can guess the ending.

Things usually work out, and if they don't, you can always tell yourself it was only a book"

The Duff - Movie Trailer

The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend - Kody Keplinger

Yet another book I haven't gotten around to reading yet.

The Red Tent now a Lifetime miniseries

The Red Tent - Anita Diamant

I hate that I haven't read this book yet! It's gotten nothing but praise from all my friends.

Have any of you read it? I wonder how true the miniseries is going to be compared to the book

Thanksgiving Visits

Totally Excited! My mom, dad, sister & nieces will be here in less than 6 hours!

photo thmesispa_zps1e779fbe.jpg

Of course this means I've been doing the flight of the bumble bee. Yes, I work better under pressure. Why clean prior to the day they'll be here. I have animals and children, my house gets nasty fast!

I saw this ecard this morning and it fits my Thanksgiving perfectly

*side note*  - My husband just called to be prepared for our TV to be held hostage for 3 hours.Tonight is the finale of Dancing With The Stars (which is the show my parents watch religiously)

So it begins.....

Naoki Urasawa's Monster Volumes 1 - 5

Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Vol. 1 - Naoki Urasawa, Satch Watanabe Naoki Urasawa's Monster vol. 2 - Naoki Urasawa Naoki Urasawa's Monster vol. 3 - Naoki Urasawa Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 4: Ayse's Friend - Naoki Urasawa, 浦沢 直樹, Hiroki Shirota Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Volume 5: After the Carnival - Naoki Urasawa, 浦沢 直樹, Hirotaka Kakiya

Suggestion - If you're going to read this series I suggest you get at least 5 out at a time. (There's 18 volumes all together)

I have no idea why but these books have me hooked. In fact the last three nights I think I've dreamed about the volume I had just finished.

I can't believe I'm only on volume 6 and there are 12 more to go. What else can happen?

*Reason I started this series: Saw a post from Familiar Diversions

.

But I promised..

I promised myself once I was done with the two series I was Binge watching. City Hunter (was great) and Peaky Blinders ( frickin' Rocks!) that I'd take my reading serious. I'd finally finish my reading challenge, which I lowered down from 114 to 100, and I'd not look at Netflix again until I was done.

Then Heroes and Heartbreakers had to post this. This silly post on how Mulder & Scully have ruined us for all other TV Romances.

As I'm reading the article I can feel myself planning days of easy lunches and dinners so I can sit at this computer and Binge watch one of my all time favorite shows. (Is it bad I planned for lots of Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwiches?)

*Having a hard time not shouting out "I Love Mulder & Scully"*

Okay I promise. I'll finish my challenge.

3 more books! ( Here I come Manga & graphic novels!)

Do you have a favorite show you Binge watch when you really should be reading?

Do you have a favorite TV series couple?

I also love Farscape's Aeryn Sun & John Crichton. They would be my close second

(honorable mention - Choi Young & Yoo Eun-Soo from The Great Doctor/Faith)

Diamond Willow by Helen Frost

Diamond Willow - Helen Frost

Have you ever looked at the pile of books you have gotten out at your library and spy a book which you have no idea why you have.

This is one of those books. I can't remember if I got it off a list, or if someone recommended it. I just know I had it. Sitting here. Waiting for me to read. and for some reason when it was due back I renewed it .

Finally opened this small book up.( It only has 109 pages). The story is told in Free Verse. Each pages' words are shaped like a diamond.

I know a lot of people dislike Free Verse, but this story is soo short that I think  even if you don't think you'd like it, you would.

Willow is a 12 year old girl living in Alaska. She has one best friend and a feels like her parents won't let her grow up.

So one day she asks her parents to let her take 3 sled dogs to her grandparents house, 12 miles away. By herself.

They let her go.

That's how this story starts off. but it has a hidden gem that I don't want to say too much about.

Was not expecting to cry, but by the end I had a hot tear running down into my ear, as I lay in bed trying not to sob and wake my husband up!

As a bonus, I've learned a little about a "Diamond Willow" stick!

Turn Around Bright Eyes by Rob Sheffield

Turn Around Bright Eyes: The Rituals of Love & Karaoke - Rob Sheffield

It's okay, really. Go ahead sing as much of the song as you can. See that's what this book is about. Being able to let go and just SING! Even if you can't carry a tune, Karaoke makes you feel like it's okay to suck and still be on the stage singing to a bunch of strangers.

"It's a spiritual quest.

This spiritual quest, like so many spiritual quests, involves Bonnie Tyler."

This book is not just a book about karaoke, it's actually a biography, which for some reason I didn't realize until after I started reading it and a spot in the book made me look at the label on the spine. It has a lot of other stuff in it. Like the time he went to a Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp. (which I felt was one of the boring parts of the book)

"Over the years, I've gotten totally obsessed.

Like I said, I have a karaoke problem.

But admitting the fact that you have a problem is the first step toward making it an even bigger problem."

Rob Sheffield is older than me so the type of music he talks about is not the music I was obsessed with growing up, but there were plenty of bands and  songs I knew. Like -

The Beatles - he goes through a chapter talking about how during your life you love one Beatles song then in a little while you mature and another one becomes your favorite.

I also never payed attention to what was going on in the song  "She Loves You" until he pointed it out. Weird. (pg 155)

Rod Stewart -

"Nice try, Oedipus, but there are in fact three ages of man:

1. He thinks Rod Stewart is cool

2. He doesn't think Rod Stewart is cool.

3. He is Rod Stewart.

No man ever plans to turn into Rod Stewart. It just happens. There are days when I dread this fate. And there are other days when I think every minute of my life I don't spend being Rod Stewart is a waste of time."

I didn't know that they wouldn't play a line of his song "Tonight's The Night" on the radio because it talked about "spreading your wings". What a joke. Now they have songs like Blurred Lines on the air.

Neil Diamond - Yes, I know who Neil Diamond is, and I could probably sing the whole album of The Jazz Singer. My mom was a big fan , and when your parents are big fans of some one when your little, that means you are too, because it's the only records in the house!

"Honey's sweet, but it ain't nothing next to baby's treat" - Neil not only wrote that line, he kept it in the song. Now, if you or I were trying to write a hit, and we came up with a lyric like that, would we say, "Hey, I think that's a keeper - our work is done here" ? Ah, no. We would immediately crumple the paper, burn the tape, and never mention it to even a closest friend."

He also talked about movies like Jaws, Star Wars. TV shows like Welcome Back Kotter.

If you know what I'm talking about, then you'd understand this book. I'm afraid the younger generations just won't get some of the references.

Now I'll admit..  at the time I started this book I'd never been to a "Karaoke bar" or to a Karaoke night at some bowling alley or any where else. So I was kinda fascinated by the whole "getting up in front of strangers and singing". I can't believe it's still popular. Doesn't it seem like it's just a crazy fad and it would have been long gone by now?

BUT about halfway through the book my little coffee shop down the road had Karaoke Night. So I bravely took my teenage sons and their friends and we went.

Did I sing? Hell yes! Even my youngest who HATES talking in public got on that stage and became a Showman. He was twirling around kicking out his legs, flirting with the audience.(who were just the people that came with us, Thank God!)

Sheffield talks about when you first start singing you find out whose voice suits you and whose doesn't. this is true. I found mine. It's Pat Benatar. (That's right Hit Me With your Best Shot!) But I can also have the Joan Jett quality

"We came here to be stars

. But it goes deeper than that - we came here to make each other stars."

Listening to someone read a book or poems...umm.. no

May I Feel Said He - E.E. Cummings, Marc Chagall, Linda Sunshine

I've tried the whole audible thing. I just can't do it...

wait...

       a...

           minute...

Tom Hiddleston reading...

I may have to rethink this.

"May I Feel said He" E.E. Cummings"

Morning Glories Vol.1 by Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma

Morning Glories, Vol. 1: For a Better Future - Joe Eisma, Nick Spencer, Rodin Esquejo

Randomly picked this up off the shelf.

Basically a handful of teens are accepted into an Elite school. Not sure what kind of Elite school. One where they unlock special powers?

While the story isn't that original there are characters that I like, because they made me laugh. Loved the Star Wars references.

Not the greatest, but I'll read the next volume so I can get a little more information. Since this one didn't really give you squat.
